Summer Tours and Walks 2008

Saturday 17 May 2008: McKee Barracks

A tour has been arranged to McKee Barracks, Blackhorse Avenue, Dublin 7 to see the Army Equitation School followed by a visit to the Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park. Afterwards, if there is time, and members are interested, a trip to the nearby Military Cemetery, given by Michael Pegum, will also be included.

Members should meet at 10.15 am at the entrance to McKee Barracks on Blackhorse Avenue where the tour will begin at 10.30 am. The No. 10 bus travels directly from Morehampton Road in Donnybrook to the Phoenix Park. If travelling by bus, members need to get off the bus at the nearest stop to the junction of the North Circular Road and Blackhorse Avenue.

If you would like to come on this tour, please let Gail Wolfe know by 10 May either by text or call to her mobile phone as a list of participants has to be given to the Department of Defence in advance. Book early as numbers may have to be limited.

Saturday 7 June 2008: Sandymount Walking Tour

A walking tour by Brian Siggins and John Holohan of some local historical sights in Sandymount has been arranged for the above date. This walk will begin at St. John's Church, Park Avenue at 10.00 am. The itinerary will include St. John's Church, the Martello Tower, Merrion Strand and other sights.

If you would like to come along, just turn up at 10.00 am on the 7 June.

Spring Programme 2008

Lectures are held at St. Mary's National School, Belmont Avenue, Donnybrook at 7.30pm. Parking is available. Events are free to members of the Society and €3 for visitors.

A talk by Dr. Christopher Moriarty on 24 January 2008 on the history of the River Dodder.

A talk by Professor Davis Coakley on 21 February 2008 on the history of the Royal City Hospital in Baggot Street.

Writers and Artists of Ballsbridge, Donnybrook and Sandymount
A talk by Peter Costello on 13 March 2008 on a variety of local Writers and Artists.

From Bootmaking to Building- A look at how Patrick Plunkett and Patrick Cranny became Dublin 4 and 6 Developers
A talk by Honor O'Brolchain on 10 April 2008 on the development of the area.

SCHOOLS LOCAL HISTORY COMPETITION

In conjunction with the History Teachers Association of Ireland, the Ballsbridge, Donnybrook and Sandymount Historical Society have established a schools local history competition in order to promote the study and research of local history amongst the younger generation.

A prize of €300 and a certificate will be awarded annually by the Ballsbridge, Donnybrook and Sandymount Historical Society to a second level student, for the best essay on a topic of local history based on the area of Ballsbridge, Donnybrook and Sandymount.

The criteria and conditions are as follows:

  • The competition is open to individual students in Transition Year upwards, attending schools within the greater Dublin area.
  • The essay will relate wholly or predominately to an aspect of the area of Ballsbridge, Donnybrook or Sandymount.
  • The essay should be between 1,500 and 2,500 words and in lenght, exclusive of footnotes and bibliography. It should be submitted in typed form, double-spaced, on one side of the paper only.
  • Referance to several sources, and especially to primary sources, is encouraged. Either footnotes or end notes may be used. A full list of sources consulted, including a bibliography, should appear at the end of the essay.
  • Illustrations (maps, photograph's, etc) may be used where appropriate. When these are included the essay should contain a list of illustrations, identifying the subject and source of each illustration.
  • Entries should be authenticated by the history teacher as being, to the best of his/her knowledge, the work of the named student.
  • The essay should be submitted, with an accompanying letter of authentication from the history teacher. It should be sent to the Hon. Secretary, Ballsbridge, Donnybrook and Sandymount Historical Society, c/o Pembroke Library, Anglesea Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.

THE CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES IS 10 MARCH 2008

The essays will be judged by the chairman of the society or his nominee; by a specialist in local history studies; and by a nominee of the History Teachers Association of Ireland.

An award will be made only if, in the opinion of the judges, a satisfactory standard has been reached.

Certificates of merit may also be awarded if, in the opinion of the judges, the quality of the other entries is sufficient. THE DECISION OF THE JUDGES IS FINAL.
