Early in 2007 a steering committee was formed to set up a local historical society and organise an inaugural lecture.   The initiative for this stemmed from Liz Turley, senior Librarian of Pembroke Library and Councillor Dermot Lacey.

As a result, in January 2007 an illustrated talk was given by Dr. Séamas Ó Maitiú entitled ‘The Humours of Donnybrook’ concerning the great fair of Dublin held at Donnybrook for over 650 years. This first lecture, held at Ballsbridge College of Further Education in Shelbourne Road, was a tremendous success with standing room only on the night!

Following two very successful years, the Society continues to go from strength to strength. The current membership is almost 250.

During 2007, our inaugural year, the Society held many lectures and events; the highlight being the exhibition at the Royal Dublin Society to mark the centenary of the Irish International Exhibition of 1907. Download the Exhibition Panels (in .pdf format). The 2007 programme is detailed in the Archive Section.

2008 proved again to be interesting, with many lectures and three walking tours during the year. Details of the 2008 programme and 2009 programme are in the Archive Section.

The Society now has a Constitution, approved at the AGM on 11 December 2008. Download the Constitution (in Word document format).

The Spring Programme for 2011 is detailed in the Events Section.
